Good piece of advice - Learn to simplify things

Hello everyone! Wishing you a happy, healthy and productive year in 2018. I know I have been rather quiet for many months as I had a number of personal matters that needed my attention. Anyway, let’s get back on track and see what you have been up to since my long period of absence. Has anything significantly changed in your life since my last post – a new job, starting a retired life, addition to the family, etc? Well, it is the New Year and everyone is just recovering from the holidays and I am sure can’t wait to get back to their exciting activities. As for me, 2017 has been a learning year for me both in enriching my knowledge in new fields and learning more about myself everyday.

I read a very interesting article the other day. It was an interview with a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a major company. The CEO appears to be a down to earth person with a modest background. The CEO has no fancy titles or degrees from famous universities but yet the CEO has been very successful in her job. The interviewer asked the CEO, “What do you actually do as a CEO?” She replied, “My job is to simplify things”. She continued, “First, I need to understand what the problem is. That means I need to focus on the problem and not be distracted by other things” She went on, “Once I understood the problem, I formulate a plan to tackle it by breaking them down into smaller issues. I will then go through those issues with my management team. Once we have decided which of our team members would be best to deal with those issues, we will assign them and let them resolve it”

A lot of times when confronted with a complex problem, we would rather sweep it under the carpet and hope that it will go away. If we spent some time to look it over and understand, you will see it that it is not as complex as it looks. Break it down into smaller pieces and the problem will be clearer to you. If you can solve it, then good on you, if not, get people to assist you. There is no shame in delegating or asking for help.

Have a great year, everyone!
